Justin Bieber dominated the American Music Awards in a most un-Canadian way. Bieber won four AMA's but even better was his performance.
The American Music Awards joined with millions of Justin Bieber fans Sunday night, November 21 with a case of Bieber fever as the Canadian singer who came out of nowhere 18 months ago won all four AMA's he was up for. His final win of the night was the coveted Artist of the Year.
To add to his wins Bieber had one of the strongest performances at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles as for the first time on a show he did his newest released song, Pray. The song is his plea for a better world and with a gospel choir in back of him Bieber, who started Pray playing the piano, showed the pop world he is more than a passing faze.
Justin Bieber: 2010 AMA Artist of the Year
Fans were voting online for the Artist of the Year award and collectively gave Bieber the nod over a pretty impressive group as he beat out Eminem, Ke$ha, Lady Gaga and Katy Perry. The other awards he won were the Favorite Album award for My World 2.0, the Breakthrough Artist Award and the Favorite Male Pop/Rock Artist award.
When he accepted his Breakthrough Artist Award Bieber talked about coming from a small town and how instrumental his family, fans and management were in making it happen for him. For the Favorite Artist win he beat out Eminem and also Usher, his mentor and part of his management team.
As he accepted the Artist of the Year Bieber called Usher, who earlier won the sixth AMA award of his career for Favorite Male R&B Artist, up to the stage, saying Usher was "not only my mentor, but my best friend and my big brother." The show ended as the two hugged and smiled together.
AMA Moving Feast of Mostly Great Music Performances
Some of the other winners on the night were Taylor Swift for Favorite Female Country Artist and Brad Paisley for Male Country Artist., Rihanna won Best Female R&B Artist, Eminem won Favorite Male Rap/Hip Hop Artist award, Lady Gaga, currently touring in Europe, won for Best Female Pop/Rock and the English rock band Muse won the Favorite Alternative Rock award.
Other great performances included Rihanna, The Black Eyed Peas, Christina Aguliera, Carlos Santana, Usher and an amazing comeback by the combined boy bands The Backstreet Boys and New Kids on the Block; all nine of them did a medley of their combined big hits with a wonderfully synchronized dance routine that had many in the audience on their feet.
In winning the Artist of the Year award the 16-year-old Bieber became the youngest ever to do so in the 37-year history of the awards. Another Canadian who has won multiple AMA's is Celine Dion. And on this night Canadian Michael Buble won his first-ever AMA, for favorite adult contemporary artist
